Illegal Racing Rampant Again in Kembangan

Illegal racing is rampant again in Kembangan, West Jakarta. It is recorded that there are six locations in the area where youngsters usually hold illegal racing, namely on Jalan Kawan Lama, Jalan Baru Taman Aries, Jalan Joglo Raya, Jalan Kembangan Raya, in front of West Jakarta Mayor office, and in CNI Puri Indah.

Although the police had controlled them often times, those illegal racers are still not wary. As a matter of fact, 100 motorcycles have been confiscated in these last two months.

“Kembangan becomes the meeting point for illegal racers because it borders directly with Tangerang,” said Kembangan Sector Police Chief Comr. Heru Agus, Monday (8/11).

To minimize illegal racing activities, Agus hopes Jakarta Transportation Department or West Jakarta Transportation Sub-Department would build speed bumps in mentioned locations. He also assessed that the government should build legal race tracks for youngsters to channel their hobby. Thus, the road users would not be harmed.

“I’ve asked West Jakarta Mayor to tell Jakarta Provincial Government to build legal race tracks,” he disclosed.

Regarding the illegal racers netted, Agus explained that all this time his party only imposed social sanction to them. All netted illegal racers are obligated to make agreement letter signed by their parents, stating they will not repeat such action ever again. As for the confiscated motorcycles which do not have complete papers, they are held in the precinct.

Meanwhile, Head of West Jakarta Transportation Sub-Department Monitoring and Control Section, Imam Slamet, admitted that his ranks have received information from the police on illegal racing activities that are rampant in their jurisdiction. He promised would immediately review those mentioned locations.

“If we built speed bump in every 10 kilometers, we’re worried it would make vehicle running in 70-80 kilometers per hour jump and jeopardize other vehicles. But, we’ll review it later,” he stated.
